Actor Russell Johnson, The Professor On Gilligan’s Island Dead At Age 89

(PCM) It is with great sadness that we report the death of famed actor Russell Johnson, who is best known for his role as The Professor aka Roy Hinkley on Gilligan’s Island has passed away at the age of 89.

Dawn Wells who played Mary Anne and Tina Louise who played Ginger are the last surviving cast member of the hit series. Gilligan’s Island, the classic TV comedy about a mismatched set of castaways stranded on a deserted island, ran from 1964 to 1967.

Johnson’s character “The Professor”, was a high school science teacher, who used his expertise to build generators and other useful items for the castaways out of island materials, but as Johnson used to joke, could never find a way to simply fix a leaky boat to get them off the island.

Johnson passed away at his home in Washington of natural causes. He resided with his wife Connie. His agent Mike Eisenstadt. claims that Johnson’s death was “unexpected” and his wife and daughter Kimberly were by his side as he passed.

Eisenstadt goes on to say that Johnson was a “positive and nice guy” and always continued to work up until the time of his passing. He recently signed autographs over the Christmas holiday.

Prior to his acting career, Johnson served in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II. He was on a B-24 Liberator when it was shot down during a bombing raid over the Philippines in 1945 and he was awarded the prestigious Purple Heart medallion for his service during the war.

After the war, Johnson used his G.I.benefits to pay for acting school and obtained a few televisions roles in the late 1950′s with the most notable being “Black Saddle” before spending four seasons as The Professor on Gilligan’s Island. Johnson had one major film role in the 1955 sci-fi classic “This Island Earth”.
