Movie based on Nacogdoches writer's 'Cold in July' opens in theaters in May

In the wake of the buzz created by "Cold in July" at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, the movie based on Nacogdoches author J.R. Lansdale's crime noir novel, the latest news is that the film will open at movie theaters nationwide on May 23, according to an article on the Fangoria.com Web site.

The Fangoria article stated that the movie is the "definition of a must-see."

The movie from IFC Films was directed by Jim Mickle, and it stars Michael C. Hall of the hit TV show, "Dexter," Don Johnson, Sam Shepard, Wyatt Russell, and Vinessa Shaw, according to the IMDb.com Web site.

A review of the film's Sundance appearance that appeared in "The Hollywood Reporter" stated that Mickle has returned "to breathe vigorous new life into the pulpy neo-noir with ‘Cold in July.'"

"Michael C. Hall's stunned intensity in that role, flanked by wildly enjoyable character turns from Sam Shepard and Don Johnson, should lure a small but appreciative audience with a taste for unconventional action," the "Hollywood Reporter" review said.

Lansdale, who has a small part in the movie, coached the movie's actors and actresses on East Texas accents during the two-week period that he was on the movie's set.

"And then being able to nail those lines and present them accurately and with an East Texas feel. I was very satisfied," Lansdale said in a previous East Texas News story.

"Cold in July" is a story of a small-town Texas man who kills a home intruder and then is met by a revengeful stalker. It came to Lansdale in a dream following a day of house hunting

"I actually went to a house and saw a bullet hole in the ceiling," Lansdale said. "We were thinking about buying a new house. For some reason, that bullet hole bothered me. I thought, ‘How did that bullet hole get there?' And I went home at night and began to dream in sequence, strange enough, this entire novel."
