A home-made cannon likely fired “projectiles” at Yokota Air Base on Thursday night, according to U.S. and Japanese officials.
Residents near the base, which serves as headquarters for U.S. Forces Japan, reported explosions at about 11.30 p.m., according to a Tokyo Metropolitan Police spokesman.
Police found two metal pipes, lead wire and a battery in an empty lot about 350 meters east of the base. Partly buried, the pipes pointed toward the base, said a spokesman for Tachikawa Police, which initially responded to the calls.
Interesting turn of events here. Remember, itis very tense over there right now between China and Japan. The US, South Korea and Japan have now all flone flights through the newly established Chinese air defence zone that covers the hotly disputed Senkaku Islands. Now, somebody fires homemade rockets at a US air base, see the connection? Could this be a little show of fore from Chinese agents or something like that? If so, it would definately up the ante. -Mort
UPDATE: Broadcaster NTV reported police were concentrating their investigations on the Revolutionary Labourers’ Association Anti-Majority Faction because the incident came just hours after they arrested a top-ranking member on Thursday.
