(RNN) - What is the greatest sports movie of all time? That is the question voters will answer during "Movie Madness," a 65-film tournament that coincides with the NCAA men's basketball championship.
While discussing what movies to include, the selection committee ran into a Rocky problem. After much arguing (and a little thumb wrestling), it was decided the original and just one sequel would represent the entire series in this tournament. A selection committee vote on the sequels gave a narrow edge to Rocky IV, which faces The Endless Summer in today's play-in matchup.
Rocky IV, 1985
Stars: Sylvester Stallone, Dolph Lundgren, Talia Shire
Synopsis: Russian bad guy Ivan Drago (Lundgren), kills Rocky's friend Apollo Creed in the ring, and Rocky relinquishes his title to fight Drago in Russia on Christmas Day. Drago trains using high-tech equipment while Rocky carries logs through deep snow and climbs a mountain. The fight goes the distance, Rocky wins, and while draped in the American flag tells the crowd that all people must live in peace. Grossing $300 million at the box office, it was the most financially successful of the Rocky franchise.
The Endless Summer, 1966
Stars: Mike Hynson, Robert August
Synopsis: Two surfers travel to South Africa, Tahiti, Australia and Hawaii in search of the perfect wave. The title suggests that it's possible to follow the summer around the globe as long as you have the money and the time. The documentary launched a movement among surfers who traveled the world, just riding the waves. It features a cool soundtrack of surf music by The Sandals and narration by director Bruce Brown.
