Dr. Hook ICON
Dr. Hook was formed by southern musician George Cummings in Union City, New Jersey. The “Hook” name was inspired by co-member Ray Sawyer’s eye patch, with a nod to Peter Pan. The one-time Doctor appellation and “Medicine Show” moniker was a tongue-in-cheek drug reference, borne out in the band’s wacky novelty singles, many penned by cartoonist, poet and songwriter Shel Silverstein, including “Sylvia’s Mother” from their debut album, a live version of which is included here. The band’s second single, “The Cover of the Rolling Stone,” also featured in a live version, was emblematic of the band’s irreverent attitude and fun-filled stage show, while actually getting the band on the cover of the counterculture journal they so delightfully spoofed. After those hits, the band returned to the Top 10 in 1976 with “Only Sixteen,” in 1978 with “Sharing the Night Together,” in 1979 with “When You’re in Love with a Beautiful Woman,” and in 1980 with “Sexy Eyes,” all featured on this 11-track ICON collection.
